New Racer School Successful Despite Bad Weather At Pueblo Motorsports Park

The Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (MRA) New Racer Program recently completed its second successful race school of the 2023 season, which saw 12 enthusiastic students in attendance. 10 of those students successfully graduated from the in-depth program, which was conducted at Pueblo Motorsports Park, following a thorough classroom session held at Colorado Springs Powersports on Friday evening.

The MRA’s New Racer Program is designed to provide riders of varying experience levels with the tools they need to compete in road racing events safely and successfully. This year’s race school was particularly unique, with three 13-year-old students, and most students riding smaller bikes in the Lightweight or Ultra Lightweight categories.

“We are thrilled with the success of our race school and the enthusiasm shown by our students,” said Dan Spurlock, MRA New Rider Director. “Our goal is to provide a safe and supportive environment for new riders to learn and gain confidence in their skills.”

The on-track portion of the race school almost didn’t happen when part of the access road to the racetrack was under several feet of fast-moving water early Friday evening due to a failed drain pipe. However, by late Friday night, the water had subsided, and City of Pueblo engineers declared the outbound lane safe, allowing racers to enter and exit the track.

Throughout Saturday morning Spurlock worked closely with the instructors, making sure that the students were following instruction and receiving the best experience possible. The race school continued until 1 PM when the weather forecast called for severe thunderstorms. Students were able to receive three 30-minute on-track training sessions with their instructors before the rain came in. When the track didn’t show signs of drying, the MRA Board of Directors decided to end the race school early.

8 of the 10 graduates had already committed to buying a race license, and all of them expressed great interest in racing at one of the MRA’s upcoming events. The other two students were offered a complimentary Superstreet class to complete their certification. The MRA Board of Directors would like to commend all instructors and students for their hard work and dedication during the program. While the course didn’t go exactly as planned, it was great to see such a high level of commitment and enthusiasm demonstrated by everyone involved.

The MRA would like to thank Colorado Springs Powersports for graciously providing their facilities for the classroom portion of the race school. For more information about the MRA’s New Racer Program, visit our Come Race With Us page.
